The speed of optical module is increasing, and the volume is shrinking, so that every few years, new packaging standards will come out. It is difficult to be compatible between new and old packaging standards.
In addition, the diversity of application scenarios of optical modules is one of the reasons that lead to more packaging standards. Different transmission distance, bandwidth requirements, and application sites, the corresponding types of optical fibers are different, and the optical modules are also different.
Bidi optical module is a optical module which uses WDM (wavelength division multiplexing) bidirectional transmission technology, which realizes the bidirectional transmission in the optical channel simultaneously on one fiber. The bidi optical module has only one port, and signals are transmitted and received on one optical cable through integrated bidirectional coupler. Therefore, it must be paired.
In order to work efficiently, bidi optical modules must be used in pairs. By tuning the duplexer to match the desired wavelength of transmitter and receiver, bidirectional data transmission can be realized.
The bidi optical module reduces the number of ports on the fiber patch panel, reduces the space occupied by the tray dedicated for fiber management, and reduces the number of optical cables required.
Although the price of bidi optical module (WDM optical module) is higher than that of traditional dual fiber bidirectional optical module, the amount of light used per unit transmission distance is reduced by half. For many networks, the cost saved by using less fiber far exceeds the relatively high purchase amount of dual fiber bidirectional optical module.
