Compared with DWDM system, CWDM system without cooling laser has low power consumption, which can effectively save the cost.

Although both DWDM and CWDM use DFB laser as light source, DWDM needs to use cooling technology (i.e. cooler) to control the temperature change and stabilize the wavelength in order to prevent the wavelength from drifting out of the filter channel of the multiplexer and demultiplexer due to the change of temperature. Sometimes, wavelength locking device is used to ensure the accuracy and stability of wavelength, while CWDM does not need cooling technology At present, the cost of CWDM system is only 30% of that of DWDM system.
