1. What type of WDM?
WDM can be subdivided into CWDM (Sparse Wavelength Division Multiplexing) and DWDM (Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing). The channel spacing of CWDM is 20nm, and the channel spacing of DWDM is from 0.2nm to 1.2nm. Therefore, CWDM is called sparse wavelength division multiplexing technology with respect to DWDM.
2. What's the DWDM and the advantage?
DWDM is dense wavelength division multiplexing, with dense band spacing (0.4nm or 0.8nm), a large number of channels, and high technical requirements. It is mainly used on the trunk line, and local network and metropolitan area network are also widely used. The single channel has a high transmission rate and a large system capacity.
Advantages: DWDM optical modules are small and require additional wavelength control devices. Its main advantage is that it is the most effective solution to solve the line bandwidth expansion.
3. What's the CWDM?
CWDM is coarse wavelength division multiplexing, with a wide channel spacing (20nm) and a small number of channels (16 channels in the channel width of 1200 to 1700nm). Low technical requirements, mainly used in the access network of the metropolitan area network. The single channel transmission rate is relatively low and the system capacity is not large.
4. What's the CCWDM and the advantage?
CCWDM is a mini-wavelength division multiplexer, which is a mini version of CWDM. The size of CWDM package is basically 110×80×12mm.
In contrast, CCWDM has a much smaller package size. Adjacent channels of CCWDM use parallel beams to cascade in free space instead of fiber. Without the fiber used for cascading, the CCWDM package is only 41 x 28 x 8.7 mm3, which is 10 times smaller than the standard CWDM package.
Advantage: Device and process stability, reduced manufacturing cost, small package size, high scalability (4/8/10 or more channels), data communication network/telecom network for low cost non-cooled laser technology.
5. Which is better for CWDM optical modules, DWDM optical modules, and CCWDM modules?
From a cost perspective, CCWDM is cheaper than CWDM and DWDM. CWDM optical modules provide a convenient and low-cost solution for adopting Gigabit Ethernet and Fibre Channel. CCWDM adopts data communication network/telecom network suitable for low-cost uncooled laser technology by adopting optical communication performance, low manufacturing cost, small package size and high scalability (4/8/10 or more channels). On the other hand, DWDMs typically use denser channel spacing and are used for larger optical networks over longer distances.
