12 core connection solution
Although the common 40G optical module uses an 8-core fiber optic cable, we can still connect to the QSFP port using a 12-core connection technology. In fact, many people who use 40G cable use 12-core connection technology in the trunk network now, as shown below:
Disadvantages:
Solution 1: Insert the 12-core fiber connector into an optical module that requires only 8-core fiber. Four fibers are not used.
Solution 2 & Solution 3: Although the solution through the 12-core to 8-core cable conversion module or branch patch cord achieves 100% full utilization of the backbone fiber in this solution, it adds additional MPO connectors and insertion loss.In general, this is not the best solution in terms of cost or cable performance, so there need a more reasonable solution.
8 core connection solution
As mentioned above, the 8-core connection can easily achieve 100% full utilization of the backbone fiber and no other losses. In addition, the cabling is simpler and more flexible. However, it is slightly disadvantageous than the 12-core connection in terms of fiber use density.
In summary, the 8-core connection is the best solution for 40G network cabling. However, due to the early appearance of the 12-core connection and the high density of fiber use, the 8-core connection and the 12-core connection will occupy a place in the 40G network of the data center. The choice of connection mode shall be determined according to the actual application and demand.
