The meaning of single fiber bidirectional optical module

Bidi optical module is an optical module using WDM (wavelength division multiplexing) bidirectional transmission technology, which realizes the bidirectional transmission in the optical channel on a single fiber at the same time. Different from the conventional optical module (with two optical fiber jacks), bidi optical module has only one jack, which transmits and receives signals on one optical cable through an integrated bidirectional coupler.

Working principle of bidi optical module

The main difference between bidi optical module and traditional dual fiber bidirectional optical module is that bidi optical module is equipped with wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) coupler, that is, duplexer, which can combine and separate the data transmitted on a single fiber according to different wavelengths. For this reason, bidi optical module is also considered as WDM optical module.

In order to work efficiently, bidi optical modules must be used in pairs. By tuning the duplexer to match the desired wavelength of transmitter and receiver, bidirectional transmission of data can be realized. For example, if the paired bidi optical module is connected to device a (uplink) and device B (downlink).

Advantages of bidi optical module

The most obvious advantage of using bidi optical modules, such as the sfp+ bidi and the SFP bidi optical modules, is to reduce the cost of the fiber cabling infrastructure. The bidi optical module reduces the number of ports on the fiber jumper panel, reduces the tray space dedicated to fiber management, and reduces the number of optical cables needed.

Although the price of bidi optical module (WDM optical module) is higher than that of traditional two-way optical module, the number of light used per unit transmission distance is reduced by half. For many networks, the cost of using less fiber is far more than the relatively high purchase amount of dual fiber bidirectional optical module.


Introduction of single fiber bidirectional optical module type

The bidi optical module can be divided into bidi SFP, bidi sfp+, bidi XFP and bidi x2.

Bidi SFP optical module

Bidi SFP optical module is used to transmit and accept different central wavelengths in two directions by WDM technology, and a single fiber is applied to the high-performance integrated duplex data link. If the transmission distance is within 40km, the bidi SFP optical module with wavelength of 1310nm/1550nm and 1310nm/1490nm shall be selected; if the transmission distance is more than 40km, the optical module with wavelength of 1550nm/1490nmbidi SFP shall be selected.

Bidi sfp+ optical module

Bidi sfp+ optical module is an enhanced type of SFP optical module, with a rate of 10G. It is used in the bidirectional 10g serial optical communication between 1330/1270nm transmitter and 1270/1330nm receiver. It is mainly used in 10GBASE LR Ethernet, 10g LW fiber channel fiber channel and other fields.

Bidi x2 optical module

The bidi x2 optical module is composed of 1330/1270nm DFB laser in the transmitter part, and the receiver part uses the integrated 1270/1330nm preamplifier and post amplifier, which is mainly used in bidirectional 10g serial optical communication.

Bidi XFP optical module

Bidi XFP optical module is an XFP MSA optical module with built-in digital diagnosis function. Its transmitting and receiving wavelengths are 1330nm/1270nm and 1270nm/1330nm respectively. Generally, it is used with band SMF, and the maximum transmission distance can reach 10km. The power consumption of bidi XFP optical module is less than 2W, and it is applied to 10G Ethernet.

 

The difference between single fiber bidirectional optical module and double fiber bidirectional optical module

Through the introduction of single fiber bidirectional optical module above, the difference between single fiber bidirectional optical module and double fiber bidirectional optical module is obvious

1. WDM technology is used in single fiber bidirectional optical module, but dual fiber bidirectional optical module is not used;

2. Single fiber bidirectional optical modules need to be used in pairs, while dual fiber bidirectional optical modules do not;

3. The structure of single fiber bidirectional optical module is more complex than that of double fiber bidirectional optical module, so a splitter and combiner should be introduced into the optical module;

4. Only one fiber is needed between single fiber two-way optical modules, and two fiber two-way optical modules are needed;

5. Generally speaking, the price of single-mode optical module is higher than that of multi-mode optical module for the following reasons:

The core diameter of single-mode fiber is small, only one mode transmission is allowed, and the dispersion is small, so the coupling with optical devices is relatively difficult; the core diameter of multi-mode fiber is large, which allows hundreds of modes transmission, and the dispersion is large, so the coupling with optical devices is relatively easy, and the size of coupling components is well matched with that of multi-mode fiber; The single-mode optical module can run on both single-mode fiber and multi-mode fiber, while the multi-mode optical module can only run on multi-mode fiber.



Application environment of single fiber bidirectional optical module

1. Single fiber bidi optical module is more expensive, but it can save fiber resources. It only needs one fiber, which is a better choice for users with insufficient fiber resources.

2. The dual fiber optical module does not need to be used in pairs. Any two optical modules can be connected, which is cheaper than the single fiber bidi optical module. However, it needs to use one more fiber. If the fiber resources are sufficient, the dual fiber optical module can be selected.
