What is RJ45?

What is the SFP port

Selection principle of RJ45 electric port and SFP optical port

First, both ports are used to transmit Gigabit rates. However, when the transmission distance is more than 100 meters, we should choose the optical port and optical module instead of RJ45 port and copper cable.

When the transmission distance is less than 100 meters, the following aspects should be considered in the selection of the two

1. Security: in a relatively harsh environment, optical modules are safer than copper wires. Because the electrical signal in copper wire is easy to cause fire or lightning.

2. Reliability: because the basic component of optical fiber is quartz, which only transmits light and does not conduct electricity, the optical signal transmitted in it is not affected by electromagnetic field, so the optical fiber transmission has strong resistance to electromagnetic interference and industrial interference. Because of this, the signal transmitted in the optical fiber is not easy to be eavesdropped, so it is conducive to confidentiality. The copper wire of RJ45 interface often produces crosstalk in current transmission, which is usually called electromagnetic interference. It refers to the interference of power equipment, such as some high-voltage wires, to other electronic products around when they work. So fiber has an advantage over copper in this respect.

3. Network upgrade requirements: if there is a demand for bandwidth upgrade in the future, the optical fiber jumper has more advantages than the network cable with class 5 / 6 RJ45 interface.

4. Cost: the actual working speed of the two is the same, but the copper port will be a more cost-effective choice, because the copper wire is cheap, and the optical port needs to be used with the optical module and optical fiber jumper, which will be an expense.


What's the difference between electric port and Ethernet port?

1. Different characteristics: the electrical port refers to the self physical characteristics, which is the electrical signal 5261 processed by 2113. Ethernet port is a layer-2 feature of 4102, which processes the data of Ethernet 1653.

2. The meaning is different: the electric port is the general name of RJ45 and other twisted pair interfaces in the server and network, sometimes it also includes coaxial cable port.

3. The common interface is different: usually the electrical interface may use 100 Gigabit Ethernet, Gigabit Ethernet, 10 Gigabit Ethernet or other kinds of transmission protocols.
