What is AON?
Aon is an active optical network, which mainly adopts point-to-point (PTP) network architecture. Each user can have a special optical fiber line. Active optical network means that in the process of signal transmission, switching devices such as routers and switching aggregators, active optical devices, etc. are deployed from the office equipment to the user distribution unit. These switching devices are driven by electric power to manage the signal distribution and direction signals of specific customers. Active optical devices include light source (laser), optical receiver, optical transceiver module, optical amplifier (fiber amplifier and semiconductor optical amplifier), etc.
What is PON?
PON is a passive optical network, a point-to-multipoint network structure, which is the main technology to realize FTTB / FTTH. In passive optical network, ODN (optical distribution network) only uses optical fiber and passive components, and only needs to use live equipment at signal source and signal receiving end. In a typical PON system, the optical splitter is the core, which is used to separate and collect the optical signals transmitted through the network. These splitters for PON are bidirectional. In the down direction, IP data, voice, video and other services are distributed to all ONU units on PON by OLT in central office through 1:n passive optical splitter in ODN, and in the up direction, multiple service information from each ONU is coupled to the same one through 1:n passive optical combiner in ODN without interference The optical fiber is finally sent to the OLT receiver at the local end.
A passive optical network includes an optical line terminal (OLT) installed in the central control station and a batch of matched optical network units (onus) installed in the user's site. The optical distribution network (ODN) between OLT and ONU includes optical fiber and passive splitter or coupler.
In AON network, users have special optical fiber lines, which is easy to maintain, expand and upgrade the network. And AON network covers a wide range, covering about 100 kilometers; PON network is usually limited to 20 kilometers of optical fiber cable. Aon mainly guides optical signals through active devices, and PON uses passive devices without power supply, which leads to higher cost of AON network deployment than PON.
