Generally, there are one or more ports on the backplane of the optical network card, which can connect the network jumper of RJ45 interface or the DAC high-speed cable and AOC active optical cable of the port such as SFP / SFP +.

The optical network card can not only transmit signals in physical layer, but also transmit packets in network layer. No matter where the optical network card is located in the OSI seven layer model, it can act as the "middleman" of server / computer and data network. When the user requests to access the Internet, the optical network card will obtain data from the user's equipment, send them to the Internet server, and then receive the required data from the Internet for the user to access the Internet.

Based on different speed requirements, the current optical network card has 10Mbps, 100Mbps, 10 / 100Mbps adaptive, 1000Mbps, 10GbE or even higher speed. 10Mbps, 100Mbps, and 10 / 100Mbps adaptive optical network cards are suitable for small-scale local area network, home use or daily office; 1000Mbps optical network cards are suitable for Gigabit Ethernet, such as small and medium-sized enterprise networking; 10g or higher rate optical network cards are suitable for large-scale enterprise or data center network construction.
