Due to the potential of a new generation of pluggable coherent modules, from 2021 to 2022, even if the market share of 400G continues to grow, coherent 400G will still promote the deployment of 100G.
From this year, 400G speed will become the main source of growth in the optical equipment market. However, there will be a major turning point in 2021-2022, when the new low-cost 100G pluggable technology will open up a whole new market for network edge coherent technology.
The edge network deployment of 100G and 400G coherent modules may come at the expense of direct detection modules, and the deployment of direct detection modules will reach its peak state this year. However, the deployment of 400G ZR modules will be reduced between 2020 and 2021, because the performance of these modules may be less attractive to the three major cloud providers.
It is expected that half of Metropolitan WDM's spending in 2021 will be concentrated on compact modular platforms, partly because they can support flexible classified network architectures.
