5G is spreading faster than people think. Wen Ku, director general of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), said at the China International Trade in Services 2020 5G Emerging Services Trade Development Forum on Sept 5 that there are now more than 480,000 5G base stations and more than 100 million 5G terminal connections in China.
5G development has exceeded expectations, according to China Mobile's semi-annual performance report for 2020. The number of users of China Mobile's 5G personal plan reached 70 million at the end of June and will exceed 100 million by the end of the year.
In addition, there will be 50,000 more base stations in 2020 than the original plan, and more than 350,000 by the end of the year, covering all cities above prefecture-level.
With the acceleration of 5G infrastructure construction among operators, many mobile phone manufacturers are also actively promoting the popularization of 5G terminals, and 4G mobile phones have gradually faded out of the historical stage.
