The 35th meeting of the International Working Group on Mobile Communications (WP 5D) of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Wireless Communications Unit (ITU-R) concluded with the decision that the 3GPP standard was the only 5G standard endorsed by the ITU.
The meeting is a key meeting for the imT-2020 (5G) technology assessment process. During the three-week meeting, representatives from various competent departments and industry sectors conducted in-depth research and analysis on 7 candidate technical standards including 3GPP 5G standard, and finally came to the conclusion that 3GPP 5G standard became the only IMT-2020 international Mobile Communication system standard recognized by ITU.
Subsequently, the ITU-R WP 5D will complete the procedural work on the preparation of the IMT-2020 standard proposal at the 36BIS meeting in November this year, which will be submitted for formal adoption and publication at the Plenum of The Group 5 in the same month.
Just a few days ago, the 3GPP 5G REL-16 standard was frozen (completed) and will be officially released after the meeting. The completion and release of REL-16 standard means that equipment manufacturers can conduct research, development, testing and commercial use of corresponding products based on this version, accelerate 5G network deployment speed, and further promote 5G market expansion from traditional operator services to more vertical industry application services.
At the same time, 3GPP also officially launched the research work on the technical standard of REL-17, planned the main technical features and schedule of REL-17, and continued to enhance and evolve the existing version of the standard.
Founded in 1998, 3GPP has developed into the world's largest and most important international standard organization for the mobile communication industry, successfully leading and dominating the development of the global communication industry in the past two decades. In the 5G era, 3GPP still leads the continuous development of global 5G mobile communication industry standards.
The ITU is the United Nations specialized agency for ICT affairs, and its ITU-R WP 5D is responsible for the development of international standards for mobile communications technologies and the corresponding rules for the use of spectrum.
