What is 100G CFP?
CFP is an optical module package for high-speed digital signal transmission defined by MSA organization, which is called "C form factor pluggable". CFP was originally developed for 100G Ethernet systems, and "C" refers to 100 in Latin numbers. CFP electrical interface supports 10 × 10Gbit / s channel transmission in both TX and Rx directions, but optical interface can transmit 100G through 4 × 25Gbit / s channel as well as 10 × 10Gbit / s channel. The 100G CFP optical module is widely used in service provider transmission, data center network and enterprise network core convergence layer applications. The common types of CFP modules are CFP, CFP2, CFP4 and CFP8.
What is 100G QSFP28?
QSFP28 optical module is a hot plug module designed for 100G data transmission, which is commonly used in telecommunication industry, enterprise network and data center. QSFP28 module integrates four transmission and four receiving channels, "Q" is the abbreviation of 4-channel (Quad), "28" means that the transmission rate of each channel is 28g. QSFP28 can realize 100G to 4 × 25G branch connection or 100G direct connection according to the specific optical module type. For example, 100G QSFP28 to 4 SFP28 DAC branch cable can realize 4 × 25G transmission, and QSFP28 optical module of LC interface can be used with single-mode fiber to realize 100G transmission. QSFP28 optical module of MTP/MPO interface can also be combined with MTP/MPO-12 fiber jumper to realize 100G transmission.

100G CFP optical module is mainly used in man and long distance transmission (usually more than 10km).
Application of 100G QSFP28 optical module
Nowadays, QSFP28 has become the mainstream packaging of 100G optical module. There are a variety of QSFP28 products on the market, such as QSFP28 DAC / AOC jumper, 100G QSFP28 SR4 / LR4 / PSM4 / CWDM4 optical module, etc. These products can be divided into the following four application categories according to the transmission distance.
1. DAC copper cable in rack (less than 5m)
QSFP28 DAC cable is an ideal solution for short distance connection (less than 5m), which can provide complete wiring components and reduce system cost. If your 100G network is deployed in a rack within 5m, you can give up the 100G optical module and directly choose the QSFP28 DAC cable.
2. QSFP28 AOC/SR4 (5-100m)
To route 100G multimode optical fiber between switches with a distance of 5-100m, you can choose two ways: one is to use QSFP28 AOC active optical cable, which is suitable for 3-20m; the other is to use QSFP28 Sr4 optical module with MTP-12 OM3 / OM4 jumper, which has a maximum transmission distance of 100m.
3. QSFP28 PSM4 / CWDM4/CLR4 optical module (100m-2km)
For 100m-2km medium distance transmission, QSFP28 PSM4 / CWDM4/CLR4 is a good choice. You can use MTP-12 single-mode fiber for 500m or duplex LC single-mode fiber for 2km.
4. QSFP28 LR4 / ER4 / ZR4 transmitter
If a long-span 100G network is to be deployed between two buildings (up to 10km), the combination of 100G QSFP28 LR4 optical module and duplex LC single-mode fiber will not go wrong. If the span is longer (40km-80km), it is recommended that you choose from the 100G QSFP ER4 and ZR4 modules.
Choose 100G CFP or QSFP28?
In the process of building the network, which module to choose needs to consider two main factors: the type of hardware equipment and application environment. In terms of volume, CFP optical module is much larger than QSFP28. In terms of transmission distance, QSFP28 is often used for short distance connection (0-10km) between switches. Of course, it is not ruled out that QSFP28 ER4 / ZR4 is used with single-mode optical fiber for long distance transmission up to 40km / 80km. Although CFP module will also be used in short distance transmission, man and long-distance WDM transmission are the best places for 100G CFP.
