Compared with base-12 MTP / MPO structured cabling, base-8 MTP / MPO structured cabling can provide more efficient and economical optical fiber links for 40G QSFP +, 100G QSFP28, 400G QSFP-DD and other optical modules by using only 8 optical fibers, which replaces base-12 MTP / MPO structured cabling to some extent. This paper mainly introduces the application of structured cabling based on base-8 MTP / MPO.
Application of base-8 MTP / MPO structured cabling
At present, there are three kinds of transmission links based on base-8 MTP / MPO structured cabling: dual fiber transmission link (10G to 10G), parallel multi fiber transmission link (40G-40G or 100G-100G), dual fiber to parallel multi fiber transmission link (10G-40G or 10G / 25G-100G network upgrade). The following will introduce its application in detail from these three aspects.
Base-8 MTP / MPO structured cabling for 10G
Because the interface of 10G Optical module is LC duplex, the double optical fiber transmission link is generally used in 10G interconnection. As shown in the figure below, when conducting structured wiring, one end needs to use 8-core MTP / MPO-LC optical fiber jumper and 8-core MTP / MPO optical fiber adapter panel, the other end needs to use LC duplex optical fiber jumper and 8-core MTP / MPO-LC optical fiber distribution box, and the middle uses 8-core MTP / MPO optical fiber jumper to connect the two ends for communication.

The 8-core MTP / MPO-LC optical fiber jumper and MTP / MPO optical fiber adapter panel at one end can be replaced by LC duplex optical fiber jumper and 8-core MTP / MPO-LC optical fiber distribution box. Because an 8-core MTP / MPO fiber jumper is connected with an optical fiber connector, the total number of fibers deployed in the middle is a multiple of 8 (such as 8, 16, 32, etc.). The use of MTP / MPO fiber patch cord provides a more reliable solution for 10G applications, because the fiber adapter panel and fiber distribution box deployed in the middle will be installed in the cable management frame or fiber distribution box, which can effectively avoid the damage caused by extrusion or excessive bending of fiber patch cord. At the same time, with the structured cabling in this way, the components or new components in the link can be easily removed. This solution can be regarded as a 2-core to 2-core solution in base-8 MTP / MPO structured cabling.
Base-8 MTP / MPO structured cabling for 40G / 100G
At present, there are mainly two solutions for parallel multi fiber transmission link: the first is suitable for 40G-40G 8-core to 8-core optical fiber connection (4-core transmission and 4-core reception); the second is suitable for 100G-100G 20 core to 20 core optical fiber connection (10 core transmission and 10 core reception) or 24 core to 24 core optical fiber connection (12 core transmission and 12 core reception).
8-core to 8-core fiber connection for 40G-40G
8-core to 8-core optical fiber connection scheme is the simplest application scheme of base-8 MTP / MPO structured wiring. 8-core MTP / MPO optical fiber jumper is directly used to connect QSFP + optical modules at both ends (such as 40Gbase-sr4). However, this scheme is more suitable for short distance applications, such as interconnection between point-to-point racks or exchanges in cabinets.

Suitable for 100G-100G 20 core or 24 core optical fiber connection
100G interconnection (such as 100Gbase-sr10 optical module interconnection) can use base-8 MTP / MPO structured wiring to realize 20 core to 20 core or 24 core to 24 core connection. The following figure shows the interconnection structured wiring based on 8-core MTP / MPO connector. The solution realizes the communication from 100G CFP optical module to another 100G CFP optical module (that is, 20 core to 20 core connection), in which 24 core MTP / MPO-3 * 8-core MTP / MPO branch optical fiber jumper is used to transmit signals through 8-core MTP / MPO connector.

Base-8 MTP / MPO structured cabling for 10G-40G or 10G / 25G-100G network upgrade
There are two solutions for dual fiber to parallel multi fiber transmission link: the first one is suitable for upgrading 10G-40G and 25G-100G networks with 2-core to 8-core optical fiber connection, and the second one is suitable for upgrading 10G-100G networks with 2-core to 20 core optical fiber connection.
2-core to 8-core fiber connection for upgrading 10G-40G and 25G-100G networks
The most direct solution for upgrading 10G-40G and 25G-100G networks is to use 2-core to 8-core optical fiber connection. For example, use 8-core MTP / MPO-LC fiber jumper to connect 40G QSFP + optical module and four 10G SFP + optical modules; use 8-core MTP / MPO-LC fiber jumper to connect 100G QSFP28 optical module and four 25G sfp28 optical modules.
This scheme is only suitable for short-distance applications. For long-distance transmission, MTP / MPO fiber adapter panel and MTP / MPO-LC fiber distribution box can be used at both ends of the link, and MTP / MPO fiber jumper can be used in the middle.
2-core to 20 core optical fiber connection scheme for 10G-100G network upgrade
The upgrading of 10G-100G network can be realized through 2-core to 20 core optical fiber connection scheme. 24 core MTP / MPO-3 * 8 core MTP / MPO branch optical fiber jumper, MTP / MPO-LC optical fiber distribution box and LC duplex optical fiber jumper are used to connect 100G CFP optical module and 10G SFP + optical module, among which 10 LC duplex optical fiber jumpers are needed to connect 10 10G SFP + optical modules to realize 100G transmission.
How far will base-8 MTP / MPO structured cabling go?
To sum up, there are different 8-core MTP / MPO routing solutions in dual fiber, parallel multi fiber and dual fiber to parallel multi fiber transmission links. Based on base-8 MTP / MPO structured cabling, the cabling scheme is simplified, and a large number of optical fiber deployment is not required, which makes the data center with high speed and simple cabling. At the same time, with multiple intermediate devices (such as fiber adapter panel or fiber distribution box), the network efficiency can be effectively improved, and the deployment cost of base-12 architecture to base-8 architecture can be reduced. In addition, the 2-core to 8-core or 2-core to 20 core connection scheme based on base-8 MTP / MPO structured cabling can provide higher flexibility for 10G / 40G / 100G networks, and effectively solve the problem of equipment compatibility.
