Many users have been puzzled by the compatibility problem between SFPs and SFPs +. For example, can the SFPs + ports support the optical modules of SFPs? Can the SFP port support the SFP + optical module? Can the GBP port of Gigabit switch be connected with the GBP + port of 10 Gigabit switch? This article will reveal the compatibility between the SFPs and the SFP + ports.

What are the SFPs on a Gigabit switch?

With the continuous change of Ethernet switch's transmission rate, its port types are also changing, such as SFP port, SFP + port, SFP28 port, QSFP + port, QSFP28 port and so on. The SFP port is a compact and hot pluggable network interface. For Ethernet, the transmission rate is 1GBIT / s, for fibre channel system, the transmission rate can reach 4GBIT / s. When the optical module of SFP is inserted into the SFP port of Gigabit switch with optical fiber jumper or copper cable, the transmission of different distances can be realized.

What is the SFP + port on the 10 Gigabit switch?

The 10 Gigabit switch can be divided into 10 Gigabit optical switch and 10 Gigabit copper switch according to different port types. The 10 Gigabit optical switch is a 10 Gigabit switch with an SFP + port. The appearance and size of the SFP + port are the same as the above-mentioned SFP port. The biggest difference between the two is that the SFP + port can support a transmission rate of up to 10 Gbps. Generally speaking, 10 Gigabit switches are equipped with higher rate uplink ports, such as QSFP + port and QSFP28 port, to facilitate the connection of other higher rate switches in the topology.

In most cases, the optical module can be used on the SFP + port

Can 1G SFP optical module be plugged into 10G SFP + port? In most cases, it is possible, but if you insert an optical module on the SFP + port, the transmission rate of the link will be reduced to 1GB, and some switches will lock the rate of the port at 1G, and the port rate will not recover until you reset the switch or execute the configuration command. In addition, the SFP + port is usually unable to support rates below 1GB. That is to say, the optical module of 100base SFP cannot be used for the SFP + port. In fact, this problem largely depends on the switch itself, because some switches can support it, but some cannot. At present, 10G Optical module and 1G optical module can be inserted into the 10 Gigabit switch provided by many suppliers (but they can't be used at the same time). Some 10 Gigabit switches provided by some suppliers can only support 10G Therefore, if you want to plug the optical module into the SFP + port of the 10 Gigabit switch, you'd better consult the supplier before using it to ensure that the SFP + port of the 10 Gigabit switch can support dual rate.

Under no circumstances can the optical module of the SFP + be used on the SFP port

Can 10G SFP + optical module be used on 1G SFP port? The answer must be "no". As we all know, the speed of the optical module installed on the switch determines the speed of the port link. At present, most of the 10 Gigabit switch's SFPs + ports are backward compatible and support 1G SFPs. However, the forward compatibility of the SFPs on the Gigabit switches is not possible, that is, the 10G SFPs + optical modules cannot be supported.

Can the GBP port of Gigabit switch be connected with the GBP + port of 10 Gigabit switch?

It can be seen from the above that generally, the optical module and the optical module of the SFPs can be supported on the SFPs + ports, while the optical module of the SFPs can only be supported on the SFPs, but the optical module of the SFPs can’t be supported on the SFPs + ports. Therefore, the connection between the two ends is mainly divided into the following two situations:

1. When the 10 Gigabit switch's SF + port uses the SF + optical module and the Gigabit switch's SF port uses the SF P optical module, the connection between the 10 Gigabit switch's SF P + port and the Gigabit switch's SF P port cannot be realized. Because the automatic negotiation technology is not supported in the optical module (automatic negotiation is based on electric pulse rather than optical pulse, which can only be realized on twisted pair, not on optical fiber), and the speed cannot be adjusted to 1G, this connection method is invalid.

2. When the 10 Gigabit switch's SF + port uses the SF P optical module, and the Gigabit switch's SF P port uses the SF P optical module, the 10 Gigabit switch's SF P + port can be connected with the Gigabit switch's SF P port. At this time, the link can work normally, and the link transmission rate is 1G.

In a word, most of the SFPs + ports can support the SFPs optical modules, but the SFPs cannot support the SFPs + optical modules. When the 1G optical module is inserted into the SFP + port of the 10 Gigabit switch, the speed of the 10G SFP + port will be reduced to 1G, that is to say, the SFP + port of the 10 Gigabit switch can be connected to the SFP port of the Gigabit switch, but the transmission speed of the link is 1G. Therefore, in order to ensure the normal operation of the network, the optical modules used at both ends must be compatible with each other.
