SFP (Small form-factor pluggable) means Small pluggable. A pluggable module that supports gigabit Ethernet, SONET, fiber channel, and other communication standards and plugs into the switch's SFP port.

The SFP specification is based on IEEE802.3 and sof-8472, which support speeds up to 4.25 Gbps. Due to its small size, the SFP replaces the usual gigabit interface converter (GBIC), so it is also known as the mini GBIC SFP.

By selecting SFP modules with different wavelengths and ports, the same electrical ports on the switch can be connected to different connectors and optical fibers with different wavelengths.
