How to choose the right optical module? Below we will filter and identify the optical modules through five points.
1. Mode and distance of optical fiber
Optical fiber can be divided into single-mode fiber and multi-mode fiber. In practice, single-mode optical fiber is supported by single-mode optical module, while multi-mode optical module is supported by multi-mode optical fiber.
After determining single mode or multiple mode, the corresponding optical module should be selected according to the distance of the fiber. Normally, the transmission distance parameter of the optical module should be slightly larger than the length of the optical fiber (for example, the length of the optical fiber is 35KM, and the transmission distance parameter of the optical module to be used is 40KM). If other parameters are consistent, the longer the transmission distance supported, the higher the price of the optical module.
Experience: The transmission distance of multi-mode fiber is relatively short, and it is generally used for interconnection inside the machine room and interconnection inside the building. Single-mode fiber has a long transmission distance and can be used for medium and long distance connections.
2. Interface types of optical fibers
The interface of optical fiber determines the interface of optical module. It is suggested to select the corresponding optical module interface according to the optical fiber interface.
Experience: The fiber interface type of enterprise network market is mainly LC.
3. Optical interface working mode of optical fiber
Ordinary fiber (two-fiber two-way) is used in pairs, one to send data, the other to receive data; Single fiber two-way is through a fiber to achieve two-way transceiver. The corresponding optical modules need to be configured according to the user's optical fiber planning.
Experience: enterprise network market multi-purpose common fiber (two fibers two-way).
4. Optical module encapsulation types supported by switches
There are many encapsulation types of optical modules, different encapsulation types of optical modules, there are size differences. In order to ensure that the optical module can be installed correctly on the switch, it is required that the packaging type of the optical module should be consistent with the packaging type supported by the switch optical port.
Experience: Enterprise network market multi-purpose SFP, SFP+, SFP28, QSFP and other packaging types of optical modules.
5. Switch rate requirements for optical modules
Switches require speed matching of optical modules at both ends. If the interconnected switches use optical modules at different rates, the two switches will be unable to communicate.
At the same time, the rate of the optical module should match the rate of the optical port of the switch. It is suggested to inquire the information of the switch at both ends of the optical fiber to understand the rate of the optical module supported by the switch, and select the appropriate optical module for the two switches.
