SFP+ optical modules and XFP optical modules are both 10G optical modules, and they are mainly used for 10G optical network transmission. However, there are still some differences between the two.

1. The 10G SFP+ optical module is an upgraded version of the SFP optical module and is based on the SFP packaging form, while the 10G XFP optical module is based on the XFP packaging standard.

2. 10G SFP+ optical modules are smaller than 10G XFP optical modules, so 10G SFP+ optical modules can meet the volume requirements of high-density boards for optical modules, but 10G XFP optical modules are large in size and easier to dissipate heat.

3. The 10G SFP+ optical module has moved the signal modulation function, serializer/deserializer, MAC, clock and data recovery (CDR), and electronic dispersion compensation (EDC) functions from the module to the motherboard card, while the 10G XFP optical module It also has this function. Therefore, when the switch router does not integrate the functions required by the 10G SFP+ optical module on the motherboard, it needs to be compensated with a 10G XFP optical module.

4. The cost of 10G SFP+ optical module is lower than that of 10G XFP optical module, and it can communicate with other types of 10G optical modules.

5. For 10G communication, you can directly use a high-speed cable (DAC) to connect, the cable directly has two 10G SFP+ optical module ports, you don’t need to buy two 10G SFP+ optical modules separately, but 10G XFP does not have this mode.

6. On the switch, 10G SFP+ ports can accept SFP optical modules, while 10G XFP ports can only accept 10G XFP optical modules.

From the above differences, the small size, low cost, and multi-application characteristics of SFP+ optical modules are more suitable for the needs of high-density data centers.

At present, the most mainstream modules are small and hot-swappable 10G SFP+ optical modules that support digital diagnostic functions. Now the optical modules provided by major manufacturers are basically SFP package types, with speeds above Gigabit. The mainstream is 10 Gigabit modules. 10G SFP+ 10G optical modules meet the high-density requirements of equipment for optical modules with their advantages of miniaturization and low cost. Now they have replaced 10G XFP optical modules and become the mainstream of the 10G market.
