To further reduce the energy consumption of 5G equipment, this is one of the key issues related to sustainable development. From an environmental perspective, the new kinetic energy released by 5G must be low-carbon and low-power consumption; from a social perspective, the services provided by 5G should be inclusive and equal, so that vulnerable groups such as the elderly and the disabled can also enjoy new communications High efficiency and convenience brought by technology.
With the deepening of a new round of global technological revolution and industrial transformation, a new generation of information technology represented by 5G, industrial Internet, artificial intelligence, etc., has increasingly become a key driving force for the digital transformation of the economy and society.
On November 26, at the 2020 World 5G Conference, Gong Ke, chairman of the World Federation of Engineering Organizations and executive director of the China Academy of New Generation Artificial Intelligence Development Strategy, said in an exclusive interview with a reporter from Science and Technology Daily that the fifth generation of mobile communications (5G) Compared with the previous four generations, there are indeed significant technological advancements. China's 5G commercial use has been commercial for one year, and its popularity has never been unprecedented. However, the development of 5G must be "balanced between cold and heat."
Gong Ke frankly said that 5G goes beyond the concept of communication between people and realizes the connection between people and things, and things and things. 5G should be "hot" in various industries.
When talking about the cold thinking behind the “5G fever”, Gong Ke believes that, first, the low latency promised by the current 5G standard is the latency between “spatial interfaces”, not the end-to-end time required in applications. Therefore, it is necessary to calmly match the technical capabilities of 5G with specific applications. Second, the barriers between various industries in our country are a serious obstacle to the application of 5G in the industry. It is necessary to adapt production relations and industry management to the new 5G productivity, rather than frame the emerging 5G productivity in the existing management system. Third, although my country has made unprecedented important contributions in participating in the formulation of 5G international standards and has become one of the technology leaders, it must be noted that 5G standards and technologies are the result of global innovation. Don’t be arrogant, but actively participate in international standards. Standard formulation, and strive to play a greater role in the subsequent standardization of 5G and the development of newer generation technologies.
Currently, 5G is leading the development of new infrastructure. According to data, my country has built nearly 700,000 5G base stations since the commercialization of 5G for more than a year, and the number of terminal connections exceeded 180 million. But Gong Ke believes that more important than these numbers are industry applications and their effects, the model innovation of in-depth industry applications, and the experience of various users. Gong Ke said, “To further reduce the energy consumption of 5G equipment, this is one of the key issues related to sustainable development. From an environmental perspective, the new kinetic energy released by 5G must be low-carbon and low-power consumption; from a social perspective the services provided by 5G should be inclusive and equal, so that vulnerable groups such as the elderly and the disabled can also enjoy the efficiency and convenience brought by the new communication technology."
When it comes to the further development of 5G, Gong Ke suggested that 5G should be better integrated with industries, especially manufacturing. “Manufacturing is the foundation of the entire social production and economic life. 5G empowers the manufacturing industry to improve quality, reduce consumption and increase efficiency, promote the digital transformation of the manufacturing industry, help production safety, clean production, and enhance industrial competitiveness.” Gong Ke said, realized Global sustainable development goals, 5G is very useful, and 5G development should truly become a key technology to support sustainable development. "If it is not good for sustainable development, no matter how advanced your technical indicators are, it is not a good technology."
Gong Ke believes that the ability to deeply integrate into the industry is the key to the success or failure of 5G. In this process, the biggest obstacle is not technology, but industry barriers, traditional concepts and insufficient talents. "Breaking industry barriers and relying on the 5G public platform for digital upgrades and new business development of enterprises requires our enterprises, especially industry management departments, to emancipate their minds and change their concepts."
