According to the national grid co., LTD., the latest news, the largest in domestic construction of 5G smart grid project in Qingdao, both to achieve the network of distribution line fault in a few milliseconds automatic resection, peak and cutting power save 5G of single base station power consumption by 20%, greatly alleviate the "high power" the biggest difficulty in 5G operations.

So far, more than 30 5G base stations have been deployed in Qingdao to enable the transformation and upgrading of traditional power grids with the help of 5G technology, effectively supporting the application of 5G smart power grids.

Two new 10-kv power distribution cabinets have just been put into operation on west coast of Qingdao. "These devices are equipped with 5G distribution line differential protection, which enables the grid to automatically remove faults on distribution lines within tens of milliseconds, and users not in the fault area will not even feel the presence of faults," said the worker.

For a long time, the most difficult problem to prevent differential protection of distribution network and "zero perception" of line fault is that there is no proper means of communication. The three parties have jointly developed 5G-based differential protection devices for distribution network lines, deployed 5G slicing network and edge computing equipment. After laboratory verification, field experiments and actual network measurement, the one-way communication delay between protection devices has been reduced to 8 milliseconds and the protection action time has reached within 50 milliseconds. Compared with the previous failure on the whole line blackout, the distribution network protection has achieved a major breakthrough.

5G can not only meet the requirements of high bandwidth, low delay and wide connection for various business scenarios of smart grid such as video patrol, distribution automation and automatic meter reading. 5G, combined with edge computing, network slicing and other technologies, provides a secure and isolated private network for power grids with high data security requirements, which will surely become an important driving force for the construction of energy Internet.

At the 35 KV Substation in Qingdao, the latest 5G Peak Filling Base station has been put into operation to provide cheap and stable power supply for local 5G equipment.

Peak-fill power is used to power 5G base stations during peak hours by storing energy during low hours. It is estimated that a single base station will save 20 percent of electricity consumption, and a single base station will save 13,800 Yuan in electricity costs per year. According to the calculation of the construction of 14,000 5G base stations by the three major telecom operators in Qingdao, large-scale promotion will bring huge economic and social benefits.
